Paper Prototyping
This was my second group project in University. Most people at this point chose to make a digital board game however we wanted to improve our prototyping skills so we made a physical game.
In Courtroom Courtesy players enact a courtoom set in hell, in which souls are trialled for their good and bad deeds made in life. One player as the defense must argue for the soul to be reincarnated against another player acting as the prosecution and arguing for the soul to remain in hell for eternity!
What I learnt from this project:
- Balance: The most difficult part of this project was trying to balance between giving players enough creative freedom vs giving the players prompts and structure to instigate creative arguments. I introduced the "Judge" role, who would be in charge of making any final decisions such as wether an interpretation of the evidence cards was legal or not. Players would be able to atempt to persuade the judge why it should or shouldn't be allowed. The main purpose of the Judge was to ensure there was somone within the framework of the game who was responsible for maintaining the fun of the game.
